Spot on. I've often thought that opinions are just fashion accessories. Also interesting is the 'sophistication effect', where smarter people have a harder time chaging their minds because they are better at defending their opinions.

You have to be careful whenever you start believing something because of someone else who wanted you to. It's easy to get tricked, to become part of a social group that filters things out, in a way that you can't directly observe and compensate for, and end up believing crazy things while thinking that you're extremely rational.

I don‘t have many beliefs I would describe as deeply held. But the ones I do, I have spent at least 1000 hours on each, reading about and researching. I think it would be quite hard to convince me to change them at this point.

Here are some of them:

• God is real

• 9/11 was a controlled demolition

• controlled and moderate use of heroin is possible for some people

Wait, if you don't mind, I'm actually super curious about the first one. Since the inexistence of a god was one of the first things that came to my mind in terms of deeply held beliefs.
